Question about raising the rpms at a complete stop.?

i have an automatic and when im at a stop sometimes i like to bring up the rpms by holding the brake and giving it gas so i can launch quicker but not to much so that i do a burnout. but how is the engine turning when its in drive without spinning the tires when im at a stop?
